High Post Offense for a Skilled Post Player

When you’re coaching basketball, if you have a post player that is skilled and can handle the ball, pass, and make good decisions, these high post actions can help propel your offense and keep the defense guessing.

Starting Action

Each quick hitter in this series starts with this downscreen action to end up in a 1-4 high set.

Start with the bigs on the wings and the guards on the block.

Downscreen for the guards to pop to the wings and then the bigs flash to the elbows to create a 1-4 high set.

Center-Point Guard Pick and Roll

Ball is thrown to the 5 in the high post. The 4 immediately jabs and looks for a backdoor pass. The 3 flattens out to the corner.

The 4 continues his backdoor cut through to the opposite short corner. The 2 flattens out to the corner.  The 1 goes and sets a ballscreen for the 5.

Center – Point Guard DHO

Ball is thrown to the 5 and 2 immediately backdoor cuts.

2 continues his cut all the way around off of a stagger from 3 & 4.

1 comes off of a dribble handoff from the 5 and looks to turn the corner.

Backcut/Lob

Ball is thrown to the 5 in the high post.

2 goes over the top. If his man goes underneath, he can pop and hit a shot. Otherwise, he continues his cut over the top while the 3 goes underneath all of the action to the opposite corner. The 1 flattens out.

As the 2 gets above the 4, he makes a hard cut to the rim off of the 4’s backscreen for a layup or lob.

Center and SG DHO

Ball is thrown to the 5 in the high post. 2 & 3 start to flatten out to the corners and 4 flattens out to the wing.

1 goes and downscreens for the 2. The 2 comes off the downscreen and takes a dribble handoff from 5 and looks to turn the corner.

Weak Side Curl

Ball is thrown to the 5 in the high post. 2 flattens out to the corner.

4 sets a pindown for the 3 and the 3 looks to curl it to the rim. The 5 can hit the 3 curling, or can hit the 4 popping if his man helps on the curl.

Big to Big Pick and Roll

Ball is thrown to the 5 in the high post. 2 and 3 flatten out to the corners.

1 fakes a handoff with the 5 and pins down for the 2.

4 sets a ball screen for the 5 and executes a pick and roll or pick and pop.

Elevator Action for a Shooter

Ball is thrown to the 5 in the high post. 2 curls all the way around under the basket and up through an elevator screen from 4 and 3 on the opposite wing.

4 & 3 can read how their defenders play the action and can slip to the basket for an easy layup.
